Router Setup & Configuration

Here at GBTEL, we use and recommend Linksys or TPLink routers, and while the following instructions were created with those in mind, the same process should apply to all residential wireless routers.

How to configure your router

  1. Make sure the router is plugged in and powered on.
  2. Connect to your router via PC, preferraby using an ethernet cable. If you don't possess or have access to an ethernet cable, you can connect to your router wirelessly.
  3. From a web browser (Firefox, Safari, Chrome, etc.) enter 192.168.1.1 (or 192.168.0.1) in the address bar.
  4. Enter the default credentials for your router. They can be found in the instructions that came with your device. For most Linksys routers, you can leave the username field blank, and enter admin for the password.
  5. Once you are logged in, click on the wireless tab, then basic setup. Select manual for the configuration view.
  6. Change your network name (SSID) to whatever you'd like your home network to be called.
  7. Change channel width to 20 Mhz.
  8. Call us to determine the best channel - (519) 378 1410.
  9. If you have a dual band router, set the 5Ghz channel to 36
  10. If you would like to secure your network, click on the wireless security tab, choose your preferred security mode, and enter your passphrase.
    note: if any devices are connected to your network, you will have to reconnect and enter your new passphrase.
  11. Click Save.
